Wow! So many people showed up for the flashmob, random citizens from the street signed letters and we mailed 18 packets of  coal from Hermannplatz in Berlin Kreuzberg to Bundeskanzleramt in Mitte and to the Donald Tusk c/o the Polish Embassy asking for a green new deal and a decarbonized world economy. Meanwhile in Hamburg, socialblogger Ole delivered his packet of coal to mayor Ole of Hamburg. The movement for powershift is growing! Thanks to everybody who participated - your voice does make the difference.

You can make a difference! Just take three steps to a global power shift:

1. Buy a packet of coal.

2. Add the letter-to-your-head-of-state or the preconfigured  letter to Angela Merkel with your signature to show them what you want: Your politicians shall take action to decarbonize the world economy!

3. Pack everything and mail it off.

Watch, as your packet and thousands others block the mail rooms of the White House, Downing Street Nr 10 or 7 Race Course Road in Delhi. These heads of state will have a hands-on-experience of how big public support for a green world economy is.

The past week has been amazing: Coal for Obama has attracted many new followers on Twitter, I presented the idea at Utopia Stammtisch and received great feedback, moreover we have the first interview request, for the podcast Kanal14.

With all these great reactions we want to take Coalforobama one step further. We are planning our first flashmob, or better: coalmob. I am organizing the mob in Berlin:

• March 14 at 12 AM, at Hermannplatz. There is a Bauhaus where we can buy coal, and there is a post office, where we can mail it. We need as many people as possible! Cameras will be there to record.
• We want to take coalforobama global! I am looking for climate-savers in Oxford, San Francisco, Delhi or anywhere else! Get your friends together and do the group-mail, same day different time zone. March 14th is coalforobama-day. Contact me at daniel@coalforobama.org or better on Twitter

Ich bin ja noch neu bei diesem Twitter-Ding und followe seit der Transemdiale verschiedenen Tweets, die sich um Klimaschutz, Aktivismus und das Web drehen. Ein Einwand, den ich auf das Coal for Obama Projekt erhielt, war, Protest sei zu negativ ausgerichtet, nicht am Dialog interessiert und könne daher keine wirkliche Veränderung herbeiführen. Das hat mich doch verwundert, weil Coal for Obama zwar gegen Kohle argumentiert, aber für etwas eintritt: “Decarbonize the economy”. Also für die Energiewende, für Erneuerbare Energien, für Wirtschaft ohne Fossile Brennstoffe. Für mehr Barbecues.

Außerdem hat es aber die Frage aufgeworfen, warum wir an Protest glauben. Und warum wir versuchen, globalen Protest anzustoßen. Für mich persönlich waren Demonstrationen, Mahnwachen, Unterschriftslisten, Fußgängerzonenstände Werkzeuge der Generation meiner Eltern. Dafür war ich auf zuvielen Ostermärschen, um am Demonstrieren noch etwas cooles zu sehen. Ich fand das nicht sonderlich destruktiv, aber auch nicht sehr produktiv.

In den letzten drei Jahren hat mich am Thema Klimaschutz / Klimawandel gerade fasziniert, dass sich Ökologie und Ökonomie überschneiden, dass es einen Austausch zwischen Disziplinen gibt, die sich lange feindlich gegenüber standen: Hier die Ökospinner, da die Profit-Jungs in Nadelstreifen. Spätestens als die Schwergewichte der deutschen Solarindustrie Solarworld, Q-Cells, Solon und Conergy den Boom im Tec-DAX dominierten, war klar, dass hier eine neue grüne Industrie entsteht. Profitorientiert, aber mit dem Potential das Klimaproblem zu lösen. Es fanden sich Wissenschaftler wie der Klima-Ökonom Ottmar Edenhofer (hier mein Interview für die zitty), die erforschen wie Innovationen und Strukturwandel die Energiewende möglich machen. Läuft also alles. Muss man nur warten, der Markt wird es schon richten. Das dachte ich lange. Je genauer ich aber die Klimapolitik in Berlin auf Bundes-, Landes- und Bezirksebene berichtend verfolge, um so geschockter bin ich.

Statt den Technologiewandel langfristig durchzusetzen, fallen Politiker unter dem Druck der Klimabremser reihenweise um. Vor allem die “Klimakanzlerin” Merkel, die 2007 zum Thema Klimaschutz noch sagte: “Geht nicht, gibt`s nicht.” Ende 2008 hat sie weder ein ökologisches Konjunkturpaket vorgelegt, noch ihren Worten Taten folgen lassen. Stattdessen hat die deutsche Autoindustrie zusammen mit Merkel das europäische Klimapaket nachhaltig verwässert. Von Deutschlands Vorreiteranspruch ist nichts mehr übrig. Und das obwohl die Finanzkrise eigentlich klar gezeigt, dass non-lineare Reaktionen in einem komplexen System ziemlich üble Folgen hat - was an den Börsen wehtut, wird beim Klima noch viel mehr weh tun (Steht bei der zitty noch mal ausführlicher). Wenn wir Bürger also mehr Action beim Klimaschutz sehen wollen, müssen wir das unseren Politikern schon klar zeigen. Sonst vergessen die das. Dafür ist unser positiver Protest:

I got some emails asking what Angela Merkel should do with all the coal. I kind of think the answer is obvious. Have a big barbecue of course! A party in favor of the green economy, of cleantech companies like Solon, Vestas, or Sulfurcells and the people who are working on the transition.

At the party we went to Saturday night, Joanna and I tried to convince a charming mathematician to send his coal to Angela. He was working for Gaz de France though, and they also try to bring coal plants to Germany these days. So that was an akward political moment.

But the mathematician did share an interesting story with us. He had interned at the German foreign ministry. There was a giant cupboad in his office and so he asked his boss: What`s in the cupboard? The boss said: That’s where we keep all the postcards for saving the whales. And it turned out the cupboard was full with the postcards demanding an end to whaling. So if anybody has been wondering why we want to send big packets of charcoal: So that they can’t store our complaints in some stupid cupboard.
